RV and Camper Winterizing Tips

Preparing Your System

  1. Turn off the water heater. Turn off the electric water heater switch or shut off breaker in the breaker box.
  2. Disconnect the water supply.
  3. Drain the fresh water tank.
  4. Drain the water heater - open a hot water valve at a faucet to help vent the tank.
  5. Turn valve(s) on the water heater bypass (if equipped) *If there is no bypass on the water heater go to next step.

Blowing out the Water System

  1. Install a blowout plug to the city water connection.
  2. Blow out water system using 20-30 lbs. of compressed air.
  3. If your water heater does not have a permanently installed bypass, remove the hot and cold water lines and connect them to each other using the same sized fitting(s). Be prepared to catch some water from the water heater tank when the cold fitting is removed, due to it being lower than the drain.
  4. Open each faucet valve and close when water flow stops; beginning with the faucet furthest from the city water. Don't forget the outside shower if you have one. *Step 4 ensures all water has been blown out of the system.*
  5. Flush toilet, (flush toilet sprayer if equipped.)
  6. Remove core (filter) from canister style water filters. By-pass inline water filters.
  7. Blow out holding tank rinser (if equipped.)

Pumping Antifreeze Through the System
