When you want an RV, you have to narrow down your options so that you’re not overwhelmed by the choices available to you. One good way to do this is to decide on the type of RV you want. There are a few main types of RVs that you’ll commonly see at the dealership. This guide will help you decide which one is best for you.
 

Motorhomes

The term “motorhome” refers to any RV that you can drive, eliminating the need for a towing vehicle. There are three types or “classes” of motorhome: 

• Class A: Built on a bus chassis, these motorhomes are big and long, with panoramic windshields, integrated driving cabs, private bedrooms, and plenty of interior space.
• Class B: Built on a van chassis, with the driving cab integrated into the overall layout. Typically has room for no more than two or three sleepers, with limited features and not much space, but very easy to drive.
• Class C: Built on a truck chassis, with a separate driving cab underneath an alcove. A good in-between size and also very easy for most people to drive.
 

Travel Trailers

This category of towable RVs requires you to have a towing vehicle of sufficient size and strength to pull them behind you. Travel trailers are the largest subtype of RVs, with many different styles and sizes available from small teardrop trailers to larger and more well-appointed travel trailers with lots of interior space and high-quality features. You can recognize a travel trailer by its bumper-pull hitch that is capable of anchoring to almost any type of towing vehicle.
 

Fifth Wheels

Fifth wheels are also a type of towable RV, but you need a more specific towing vehicle to handle them. A fifth wheel is typically quite large, and it has a unique long hitch near the roof of the trailer which locks into a coupling unit installed in the bed of a pickup truck. Fifth wheels tend to be more costly, but the benefits are vast: you get more interior space, higher ceiling clearances, and fancy amenities like washer/dryer units, residential-style kitchen appliances, and spacious private bedrooms.
