For those who have recently purchased their very first RV, congratulations! You’re well on your way to a lifetime of great memories and experiences. But you may also feel a little overwhelmed by how to prepare for an RV trip, and that’s okay. There’s a lot more to do and pack and small mistakes can end up being costly.

Always Check the Area before Pulling In

Whether you have the advantage of choosing a campsite or if you get one assigned to you, check out the site before taking the time to pull in and set up. Look for uneven areas on the ground that could make your setup process and living much more difficult and uncomfortable. Also, consider the size of your motorhome and how well it will fit in the spot. Are there any low-hanging branches that could fall and damage your roof? Would the fit be a bit tight?

Pack Light

Despite how much room your camper may have, you still won’t be able to pack everything. If you’ve already started packing, you’ve probably realized how quickly your stuff takes up space. You only have so much storage room and trying to fit all the things you might use is probably going to be very difficult. Not to mention, it’ll get very cramped, very fast. Remember to keep in mind that, just because you have extra storage space, doesn’t mean you have to fill every inch of it.

Always have a Small Repair Kit

No matter how well you take care of your RV, it’s always possible to break down or find yourself with a minor mechanical issue. Hiring a tow truck for a motorhome can be expensive, so bring along some basic supplies to try and tie you over until you can find a professional on your own. This will probably include jumper cables, a lug wrench, a tire gauge, a spare tire, extra fuses, nuts and bolts, connectors, and anything else you think could come in handy and will fit in your RV.

Reserve Your Spot in Advance

Depending on what time of the year you’ll be traveling and where you’ll be going, campgrounds can fill up months in advance, which means you’ll need to reserve your sites as soon as you can. Make that a priority when you first decide to go camping, before you plan anything else. It’s easier to change your route when you’re still outlining it than to have to drive around in the dark looking for a place to sleep for the night. This is particularly important for larger RVs like motorhomes because not all sites are built to accommodate large rigs.
