Wood Deck Car Trailers

Open car haulers are probably the most versatile way of transporting a car. They are more economical than an enclosed car trailer and offer better protection than flat towing or towing on a tow dolly. Wood decks are the cheaper option when compared to steel decks. Car haulers are available in several different lengths and are generally 7' wide decks. 2' beavertail is standard on most of the car-trailers that we stock. Most smaller cars will fit on a 16' (14' deck plus 2' beavertail) trailer, but we can order sizes up to 20' long.

Car Tow Dolly

Car Dollies or Tow Dollies are the most economical way to transport cars. Simply drive the front or rear tires of the vehicle up the built-in ramps, onto the platform and strap them down. The other axle rides on the ground. The platform pivots to allow the towed vehicle to easily round corners. We've selected the Master-Tow Car Dolly line for several reasons: They use new tires (yes, some manufacturers install used tires on new tow dollies) that are balanced and include EZ-Lube Hubs. They use a quality finish system that etches the bare metal and then Powder Coat for durabilty. The platform is set up to pivot on poly pads (the cheap tow dollies on the internet don't pivot and they often break at the welds).

There are several configurations for a Master Tow car towing dolly. They offer a 77" wide light duty model, but we generally stock the 80" wide (accomodates vehicles up to 80" wide wheel base) car dollys. We stock them with both electric brakes--convenient if you already have a brake controller in your truck--or with hydraulic surge brakes--more expensive, but works without a brake controller.

Transporting cars and other vehicles easily and cheaply

There comes a time when everybody will need to tow a car or move a vehicle from one location to another without being able to drive the vehicle itself. Most of the time, you'd probably just call a tow truck, but at a certain point, if you transport a (or multiple) vehicle(s) often enough, it will make more sense to invest in a car hauler or car dolly. Luckily, we have a range of car trailers for sale in Erie, PA at prices that make this feasible and cost effective.

2 Up towing or All Up Towing (Dolly or Trailer)?: There are several reasons why somebody may choose to tow a vehicle on a flatbed trailer rather than a tow dolly. The car may be decapacitated because of bad tires or axle components; or, you may simply want to avoid the wear and tear associated with towing the vehicle on it's on wheels and offer better protection, up off the ground where it is less likely to be damaged. Of course, there are arguments for car tow dollies as well. The obvious is there price. They are generally quite a bit cheaper than a flat bed car trailer. They are also lighter and easier to tow, manuever and store when not in use.

Wood Deck vs. Steel Deck Car Haulers: The decision is simple when it comes to considering between a wood deck and steel deck car trailer. The steel deck is the more durable, longer lasting trailer, but it comes at a higher price tag. The treated lumber on a wood deck will last many years, but eventually, it will need restored. There is also unavoidable natural defects in wood that could require early replacement.

What about Flat Towing?: Flat towing is probably the most popular way to tow a car behind a motorhome. It requires a tow bar that attaches to the towed vehicle and mounts in the towing vehicles hitch receiver. All 4 tires ride on the ground and the vehicle must be designed with a transfer case that can disengage the drive train. This is generally the most aesthetically pleasing way to tow a vehicle, but it requires that the vehicle be designed for flat towing and a special base plate be installed on the towed vehicle. Unlike a car dolly, if you're going to need brakes, you'll need a device to activate the vehicles braking system, such as the Brake Buddy.
